Image of burned out van which closed M1 between junctions 27 and 28

Traffic on the M1 was delayed for a number of hours after a van caught fire.

Highways England said motorists were held between junction 27 and 28 at around 11.55am on Saturday, June 6, after the vehicle burst into flames.

All lanes have since reopened but delays remain due to a fuel spillage on the carriageway, and pictures show the completely burnt-out van at the side of the road.

Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire fire and rescue services attended the incident and the fire was under control shortly afterwards.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said in a statement: "M1 Northbound J27 to J28. Vehicle fire - delays in the area due to fuel spillage on carriageway."

The road reopened at around 1.30pm after the incident had been dealt with by the emergency services and traffic officers from Highways England.
