DIBRUGARH: The Assam branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), in collaboration with Assam Branch Indian Tea Association (ABITA) Zone 1, organized a free breast and cervical cancer screening camp at Jokai central hospital in Panitola tea estate on Friday.
Women, who were married and were above the age of 30 years, from across different tea estates, under Panitola circle of ABITA Zone 1, were screened. The camp was inaugurated in the presence of Sailen Goswami, additional vice chairman, ABITA and chairman, ABITA Zone 1, Madhurjya Barooah, secretary, ABITA Zone 1, Dr Prerona Kisan, gynaecologist, IMA and Dr Mukul Bhattacharyya, Zone 1 medical coordinator and circle medical coordinator of Panitola circle.
Dr Kisan, assisted by skilled nurses, conducted the screening session under 'Project Swayam'. The nursing staff of Jokai central hospital provided requisite support. Dr Bhattacharyya, who led the initiative, said that 56 female beneficiaries from Dinjan, Kharjan, Nokhroy, Rungagora, Panitola and Chubwa tea estates attended the camp. Pap smears were taken in slides and have been sent to the pathological department of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for testing.
Barooah expressed his gratitude to the IMA for taking such an initiative in the tea garden areas and stated that it was the first screening camp that IMA and ABITA had jointly held in Panitola circle. He further said that such initiatives will be undertaken across other 6 circles of ABITA Zone 1 for the benefit of those women who were living in tea gardens.
