I'm an ex-Rangers star - how England defeat reminded me of Old Firm clash

Former Rangers star Andrei Kanchelskis reckoned England's World Cup exit to Argentina reminded him of an Old Firm battle.

World Cup holders Argentina eliminated England with a 2-1 comeback win in the semi finals and will face Spain in the final tomorrow.

The ex-Manchester United and Everton winger spent four years at Ibrox and holds a unique record - he is the only player to have scored in the Old Firm, Merseyside and Manchester derbies.

And he thought the bad-tempered clash between England and Argentina was like a Celtic v Rangers showdown.

Kanchelskis said: "The game was enjoyable - there was a lot of fighting and no one wanted to lose.

"It reminded me of a Rangers v Celtic game.

"England made a terrible mistake by going too defensive after they scored and that was wrong.

"I thought it might have gone to penalties, but England reckoned without Lionel Messi.

"Messi was the difference. Even when he didn't have the ball, he took a couple o England players out by distracting them.

"To be playing at that level at 39 is amazing."
