ASAHIKAWA, Hokkaido -- Tourists gathered at the Blue Pond in Biei, Hokkaido, for an illumination event that started at the popular tourist spot on Friday.
The pond, which was made during erosion control work at Mt. Tokachi, is filled with erect, dead larch trees. The water in the pond is a vivid blue because of its aluminum content.
"I've always wanted to see this scenery. I'm glad my dream has come true," a 71-year-old visiting from Misato, Saitama Prefecture, said.
The pond will be illuminated from sunset to 9 p.m. through the end of April in 2020.
