KOBE -- An illuminated bandstand was unveiled in East Park, Chuo Ward, Kobe, on Friday for an event that is being billed as an alternative to the grand illuminations of the annual Kobe Luminarie memorial, whose scale has been reduced due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Kobe Luminarie, which commemorates the victims of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, features a famous light-corridor that typically attracts large crowds. The event's organizing committee decided to install a smaller scale illumination this year in light of the virus crisis.
The 11 meter-high and 7.6-meter-diameter illuminated Cassa Armonica bandstand is one of the installations in the reduced-scale event.
The illuminations can be seen from evening to 9 p.m through Dec. 13.
A Kobe resident said: "Luminarie, which reminds us of the earthquake, is an important event in Kobe. I hope it will be held as usual next year."
