Illuminating Neil Doncaster SPFL vote request laid bare as Championship chairman reveals his Dundee irritation

Peeved Ayr chief Lachlan Cameron has revealed he asked Neil Doncaster if he could change from a yes to a no in the infamous SPFL vote.

The Somerset Park chairman spoke to the SPFL CEO after finding out Dundee had been left in a position of power.

Cameron polled in favour of the resolution but asked if he could retract that decision once it became clear Dundee had the casting vote.

However, he was told that the governing body’s rules mean you can only change a no to a yes - which the Dark Blues duly did - and not the other way round.

Asked how he reacted when he found out Dundee were kingmakers, he added: “I mean, obviously I wasn’t thrilled.

“The SPFL were asking us to make a decision in a couple of days - I think we got the papers on the Wednesday morning and we had to make the decision on Friday.

“For the bylaws, you have 28 days if you want it, but because of what is going on with coronavirus I think everybody recognised we needed to all look past that and get it in as soon as possible - but maintain the right to take 28 days.

“So, at the time I thought maybe they’re doing it for a reason or maybe they just screwed it up, but they have the 28 days.”

He told PLZ Soccer : “I didn’t like the idea that someone was in a position of power - in fact, to the point where I called the SPFL and said ‘why don’t I just change my vote to no?’.

“(The reaction) was very professional, very typical of Neil Doncaster, who I spoke to. He explained to me that the way the rules are you can’t change your yes vote to a no. It’s a quirk of the rules that the only way you can do it is the other way around.”
