About 30 ice sculptures were lit up in numerous bright colors on Thursday evening during a lighting test for the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival in Chitose, Hokkaido, from Friday. The sculptures were built around the clock by Lake Shikotsu from late December by spraying lake water onto frameworks for the ice sculptures. Among the sculptures are a 12-meter-tall Blue Tower that evokes the color of the lake's water and a 6-meter-tall Chandelier Dome, with the sculptures creating a fantastical atmosphere when they are lit up. The festival will run through Feb. 17. Organizers are expecting about 240,000 visitors -- the same as last year.
