Illinois could become the first US state to enact a law banning the use of smart glasses while driving a vehicle, even when stopped at a red light, with a fine of US$150 and possible criminal charges in the event of an accident.
A bill prohibiting wearing smart glasses while behind the wheel has already passed through several legislative stages and awaits only the signature of the state governor, JB Pritzker, to become law.
The legislation prohibits motorists wearing smart glasses under any circumstances. This means the law will cover all types of smart eyewear, both models with built-in displays and those without screens.
The bill includes specific provisions designed to prevent drivers from exploiting legal loopholes. It explicitly states that wearing these devices while driving is prohibited, even if the user claims the glasses are in hands-free, voice-activated mode.
The restriction also applies to drivers stopped at a red light, making any such use an offence whether the vehicle is moving or not.
Penalties for first-time offenders will start with a fine of about $75 (around 2,500 baht). This penalty will escalate to $150 (around 5,000 baht) for repeat offences.
Crucially, if a driver wearing smart glasses causes a serious traffic accident, they could face criminal prosecution.
It is not known when the Illinois state ban on smart glasses while driving will come into effect. If the legislation is fully enacted it could deliver a significant blow to the momentum of several tech brands currently developing advanced navigation systems for smart eyewear users.
