The Illinois General Assembly adjourned its 2026 regular session on June 1 after passing two election-related bills and one resolution. Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) signed the two bills in June and July.
One of those bills was HB 4339, which requires school districts to provide all eligible graduating high school students with the opportunity to register to vote, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.
The state House of Representatives passed the bill on April 8 by a vote of 77-24, with 73 Democrats and four Republicans voting in favor and 24 Republicans voting against. The state Senate passed the bill 41-12 on May 29, with 38 Democrats and three Republicans voting in favor and 12 Republicans voting against. Pritzker signed the bill on July 10.
In June, Pritzker signed SB 3645, a bill moving the dissolution of the Ranked-Choice and Voting Systems Task Force to Jan. 1, 2027, rather than July 1, 2026, and moving the deadline for the task force to publish a set of recommendations to Jan. 1, 2027, rather than June 30, 2025.
The state House also passed one election-related resolution, HR 652, which urged federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to refrain from conducting civil immigration enforcement operations at or near locations where voting or election administration is taking place.
Illinois lawmakers enacted no election bills in 2025, three bills in 2024, and six bills in 2023.
