Around 600 illegally dumped tyres had to be cleared from waste ground in South Belfast yesterday.
A clearance team sent in to get rid of the tyres, that were ditched at Milner Street in the Donegall Road area , filled a large lorry container with them.
The move, involving the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and Belfast Council , came after locals complained that hundreds of the tyres had been left close to their homes. Concerns were also raised that they could end up on a bonfire.
Trevor Greer, a local community worker, called on the Council and NIEA to remove the waste.
He added: “I couldn’t believe how many there were. When I first came down I thought there were 200 or maybe 300. But once they’d loaded them all up, the fella said there was 600.

“Apparently it’s just over £2 a tyre to get rid of them properly, so there’s a fair few quid someone’s saved by dumping them here. And the taxpayer or the ratepayer is now going to be left with the bill for getting them moved and disposed off properly. Fair play to the Council and the EA for getting it done though. They went around the whole site looking for them to make sure they were all gone."
