Seven men have been caught illegally hunting deer in Victoria and will be charged with firearms offences.

Officers from Victoria Police, Game Management Authority and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, led overnight patrols at illegal spotlighting hotspots at Mansfield and Jamieson between November 11 and 13.

They caught seven men and seized six firearms, seven spotlights and ammunition during the operation.

Charges are expected to be laid over firearms offences and wildlife game regulations..

Six of the seven men have had their firearms licences suspended while the seventh person was unlicensed.

"Illegal spotlighting is not only against the law, it is dangerous, unethical and reduces recreational hunting opportunities for law-abiding hunters," Mansfield Acting Senior Sergeant Geoff Hutchison said.

"Hunters should be reminded that illegal hunting activity is likely to result in immediate suspension of firearms licences, seizure of firearms, and the facing of charges."
