Illegal scrap dealer caught with car wreckage loaded onto a truck handed fine

An illegal scrap dealer was landed with a £4,219 bill when caught driving a truck loaded with a wrecked car and other motor parts.

Jake Mayfield, 25, did not even have insurance to drive the vehicle when caught in a check involving police and transport experts, city magistrates heard.

His Ford Transit truck was seized by police officers and Mayfield was found to have no waste operator's licence, said Adam Haselhurst for the Environment Agency.

But he even has a Facebook entry which confirms his work as a scrap man, the court heard.

Mayfield failed to attend court on a charge of being an unregistered carrier who was transporting controlled waste on December 11 at Newark.

He was found guilty in his absence and fined £2,640, with £1,409 prosecution costs and a government surcharge of £170.

Mayfield was given three weeks to pay. His address was given in court as Blackthorne Close, Balderton.

Mr Haselhurst said in November, Mayfield was fined £1,800 for depositing waste without a permit in Lincolnshire. That also led to an award for costs of £2,458.

Mr Haselhurst told the court Mayfield had a passenger when caught on the second occasion. This man said he was taking the car parts to a Newark scrapyard as a favour.

But a search of the vehicle turned up two receipts for other waste transport jobs.

"This is a deliberate offence by Mr Mayfield. He clearly runs a scrap business - he has a Facebook profile which confirms that.

"He must have known he had no waste carrier licence and very much disregarded the law," said Mr Haselhurst.

When stopped at the roadside, Mayfield refused to be interviewed and became abusive to the officers, he added.

The load of waste included the shell of a Ford Fiesta Zetec. Its rear window was smashed and the car also contained parts from other vehicles.
