'Illegal rave' at beauty spot foiled as police officers swoop on historic Rivington site

An 'illegal rave' at a popular beauty spot was thwarted after police discovered 'intelligence' suggesting a party would be held on the historic site.

Police swooped on Rivington and Anglezarke, near Bolton, over the weekend.

Officers understood that a 'rave' would be taking place during the spate of clear skies and warm weather.

Police 'intelligence' led officers to believe that a rave had been organised at Rivington, according to Lancashire Police.

The force marshalled a number of organisations in response to the possible party, including Rivington Pike landowner United Utilities, Rivington Heritage Trust, North West 4x4 Response, and the Special Constabulary.

The groups provided a heightened presence over the weekend of June 19 and 20, stopping any party plans in their tracks.

North West 4x4 Response slammed those who plan illegal raves, saying: "We are always willing to assist the emergency services with appropriate tasks throughout the North West at short notice.

"Anyone who has been to an organised festival or legal rave will know the planning which takes place to keep their customers safe, keep the locals appeased and will have seen the carnage and litter left over… an illegal rave does none of this.

"If we are able to assist the police to disrupt and prevent these prior to their set up, we will."

In a post on Facebook, Chorley Police said: "Big thanks to United Utilities, Rivington Heritage Trust and North West 4x4 Response as well as the Special Constabulary for the presence shown in Rivington and Anglezarke over the weekend.

"Fortunately there was no rave in Rivington this weekend as we first thought.

"Credit to the staff and volunteers that work so closely with Chorley Police. These images show you exactly what equipment we have at our fingertips when we need it.

"We work closely together to help keep our countryside beautiful."
