In a recent court hearing, one of the illegal immigrants involved in the brutal assault of two New York City police officers in Times Square earlier this year has agreed to a plea deal. Darwin Gomez-Izquiel, 19, accepted the terms offered by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, which will result in a 364-day jail sentence for him.
Two other migrants, Yohenry Brito, 24, and Ulises Bohorquez, 21, were also offered plea deals to serve a year in jail after pleading guilty to second-degree assault, according to sources from the DA's office.
Patrick Hendry, president of the New York Police Benevolent Association, expressed his belief that the suspects should face longer sentences. However, he acknowledged Gomez-Izquiel's guilty plea to a felony and emphasized the importance of deporting him immediately upon release to prevent further incidents on city streets.
Hendry highlighted that there are additional defendants with more significant roles in the assault on the officers, and their cases are still pending.
The incident dates back to January when an NYPD officer and lieutenant were attacked by a group of migrants while instructing them to move along a street in Times Square. Surveillance footage captured the migrants physically assaulting the officers, punching and kicking them while they were on the ground.
Following the attacks, criticism was directed at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the Biden administration regarding the handling of migrant influx and releases into the United States. Many of the suspects were charged with assault but released without bail, with one individual, Yorman Reveron, facing two pending cases for assault and robbery.
