Illegal firework rave in Greenock as cops 'pelted with bottles' trying to break it up

Dozens of police officers have been called to a Greenock street after a massive crowd gathered for an illegal fireworks display, bonfire and street rave.

The shocking scenes soon descended into chaos with reports of bottles being thrown at cops and firefighters on Auchmead Road on Thursday night.

Fireworks and a bonfire were also visible in the video from the rave (UGC)

Video footage understood to be from the scene shows a DJ playing loud music for street party revellers while fireworks explode in the sky behind them.

A large bonfire blaze can also be seen in the background.

The St Andrew’s Church shared a statement on social media claiming that one of their clergy had tried to take on the rowdy troublemakers.

They said: “Hundreds have gathered for fireworks and are using the church wall as a public toilet.

“Father Danny has tried to keep them out but has just been advised by the police, for his own safety, to stay inside.

“Both fire service and police have had bottles thrown at them.”

Separate reports also claim that another person had been ‘bottled’ during the ruckus.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 7.47pm on Thursday, November 5 to reports of a bonfire in Greenock.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to Auchmead Road, where firefighters requested the assistance of their police partners after encountering antisocial behaviour.

"There were no firefighter injuries."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
