VISAKHAPATNAM: Illegal transportation of cattle has emerged as new challenge for the police in Vizianagaram and Manyam Parvathipuram districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Gangs from neighbouring Odisha and Karnataka are engaged in the illegal transportation of cattle to various destinations from north coastal AP. Shortage of beef in other states is one of the major reasons for the smuggling of the cattle. A senior police officer said the smugglers procure the cattle from Pedamanapuram, Alamanda, Kandivalasa, Parvathipuram and a few other locations where weekly shandies take place, and transport them to various destinations .
Though the police have registered over 250 cases, seized over 3,000 cattle, and arrested over 600 people in connection with illegal transportation of cattle in the past two years, the trade continues unabated.
