Illegal 'Back to the Future' phenomenon hits Bristol

An illegal practice showcased by Marty McFly in the Back to the Future film has been reported in the Bristol area.

'Skitching' involves someone holding on to the back of a moving vehicle while riding a bike, roller skates or skateboard.

Police say they have received two recent reports of skitching in the Emersons Green area.

These are not the first cases of skitching – first popularised by Michael J Fox's character in 1985 classic Back to the Future – in Bristol.

In 2017 a cyclist decided the best way to go up Park Street was to hold onto the back of a bus.

A witness said at the time: “It was like the moment Marty McFly grabs the cars on his skateboard in Back to the Future."

Speaking about the Emersons Green reports, an Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said: "We are encouraging the public to report incidents and we will take action against the offenders.

"The practice of skitching is both dangerous to the individual and illegal under the Road Traffic Act. Anyone spotting people skitching is asked to report it to us."
