Illan Meslier’s Leeds United future: What Bielsa has said, £5m fee, when Whites must decide

Goalkeeper Illan Meslier is set to return to French side Lorient once his loan deal with Leeds United expires at the end of this season.

The 20-year-old has impressed United fans when given a chance to play this season by Marcelo Bielsa. In the Whites’ two recent matches prior to the FA’s suspension on all professional matches, Meslier had been starting in goal due to Kiko Casilla’s ban.

Meslier is one of the highest-rated young goalkeepers in Europe at the moment, with reports in recent months suggesting that Leeds are considering signing the Frenchman on a permanent basis this summer.

Here is the latest on Meslier’s current situation at Elland Road, when the Whites have to decide when to sign him by, what Bielsa has said on his future and more.

Loan move to Leeds

Meslier arrived at the start of this season on a season-long loan as an understudy to experienced Spanish goalkeeper Casilla.

As part of the deal, the Whites do have the option to buy Meslier permanently this summer.

Appearances so far

Meslier had to bide his time to get a chance in United’s starting side, not making his senior debut in England until January. His debut came in the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Whilst Leeds were unable to prevent themselves from a third round exit, Meslier impressed.

His league debut came on February 29 during the 4-0 victory over Hull City in the Championship. In league matches, Meslier has kept two clean sheets in as many appearances.

Meslier is likely to keep his place in goal for the Whites’ next six games in the Championship, with Casilla currently serving an eight-match suspension.

What Bielsa had said

Bielsa last spoke about Meslier following his Championship debut against Hull last month.

“He was calm, confident, he took risks, [he was] good in the aerial play and he gave us the feeling he is confident,” said Bielsa after the 4-0 win.

When Leeds have to sign by and £5m fee

Reports from Football Insider suggest that a permanent transfer for Meslier would cost the Whites £5 million.

The same report also states that if United did want to turn the deal into a permanent move, they have a deadline which is believed to be in the middle of May.

Last week, Football Insider reported that Meslier would be interested in a move and that the Whites would have to sign him permanently if they do earn promotion to the Premier League this season.
