Illan Meslier mistake hard to stomach but Leeds United have him to thank for previous victories

Illan Meslier is the Premier League's youngest goalkeeper to have featured regularly this season. At 20 years-old, he is something of an anomaly in top flight terms; very few teams entrust such a young stopper with tending goal in the Premier League, and even fewer in their attempts to remain a top division outfit.

In the past decade, only David de Gea and Wojciech Szczesny have been of a similar age when reaching the 15-game Premier League appearance milestone. Both were playing for clubs at the very top of the table, which brings with it a different kind of pressure altogether.

Meslier's stray ball into Tottenham Hotspur bodies which led to Spurs' opening goal yesterday was unfortunate and a real disappointment. After a succession of great performances, to have gone and let himself down in such an avoidable manner was tough to swallow.

Bielsa draws on many positives his side displayed today

In the immediate aftermath, there was much fan anger and dismay at Meslier's part in a completely preventable goal to concede. While much of it was righteous anger, it must be postured with Meslier's clean sheets and good performances.

Goalkeeping errors are all the more glaring, because they are the last line of defence. As a 20-year-old 'keeper, Meslier is going to make mistakes, it is a simple fact, very few custodians go through an entire campaign blameless or faultless.

His manager Marcelo Bielsa was staunch in his defence of the youngster in his post-match press conference, insisting that Meslier's positive interventions in previous games had won Leeds United more points than he had lost them.

"What we have to look at is how the goalkeeper performs in all the fixtures, not in just one game.

"If you look back at all our games you will see how efficient Illan is with his feet. If the goalkeeper receives the ball and just kicks it long into the opponents' half he cannot make an error. So I think the question you ask comes with an error in your conclusion," Bielsa retorted.

Looking at the bigger picture paints a more sympathetic portrait of the young Frenchman. This season, only three goalkeepers have kept more clean sheets than Meslier; Manchester City's Ederson, Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and Southampton's Alex McCarthy - the youngest of the trio almost seven years Meslier's senior.

Only West Bromwich Albion's Sam Johnstone has been in the firing line more often than Meslier, having made the most saves in the division. A save percentage of 70% is not immense, it is around the league average, but that is an achievement in itself for a player with very little first-team experience.

Meslier is also fulfilling the brief Bielsa wants from his goalkeeper. According to FBRef.com, Meslier has played the most short goal kicks in the Premier League this season, and only Bernd Leno plays short passes more frequently than the Frenchman. That is some undertaking for a young player.

To have registered just a single error leading to a goal this season is actually a reasonable outcome given how frequently Meslier is asked to play out from the back, combined with his lack of experience at this level of competition.

Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga has made three errors leading to goals this season in just three appearances, showing how easy it is to lose your nerve or switch off.

For those still unconvinced by Meslier, what is the alternative?

A return for Kiko Casilla is a non-starter for many supporters due to the alleged racist abuse suffered by Jonathan Leko last season, and in a purely footballing sense, Casilla was never the most secure or resolute stopper in the Championship. That means Leeds would need to bring in another 'keeper to pose as competition for Meslier, but with Casilla still on a sizeable contract, that remains unlikely given Leeds' resources.

On the whole, it is disappointing to see a young goalkeeper falter, but the bigger picture is where the focus should be. Eyes become trained on goalkeepers especially when they make errors, because the outcome - often a goal conceded - is so consequential.

Meslier's spread-eagle save against Bukayo Saka, the multitude of high balls he claimed and punched clear against Burnley, and the outstretched stops versus Sheffield United - all matches which were in the balance - have earned Leeds more points than he has cost them.
