Illan Meslier form highlighted as Leeds United stat showcases worrying trend

Leeds United's defensive problems were once again evident on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by West Ham.

Of course, there are extenuating circumstances behind United's dip in form at the back. Robin Koch, Diego Llorente and Pascal Struijk were joined by Luke Ayling on the sidelines this weekend, though the Dutchman will return next weekend.

In fact, Leeds haven't named the same defence in consecutive Premier League matches this season, such has been the disruption in selection.

When Leeds enjoyed their best run at the end of last season, their defence comprised of Ayling, Llorente, Liam Cooper and Ezgjan Alioski.

Firpo is an obvious upgrade in that position but more importantly, there was a consistency in selection during that 11-game run, which is what Marcelo Bielsa needs again.

That comes down to better luck on the injury front, though Charlie Cresswell impressed on his Premier League debut against the Hammers.

Illan Meslier's form from last season has continued into the new campaign and it's a good job. On the face of it, some blame may be laid at the door of a goalkeeper who has conceded 14 goals already.

However, the Frenchman has faced more shots on his goal in the Premier League this season than any other side, at 112 in six games. That's an average 18.66 per match.

The next highest is Newcastle United at 108, with Burnley following up with 102. That will come as little surprise as those three teams make up three of the bottom four in the division.

Had it not been for Meslier's good form, the damage could have been worse. For Leeds, it's clear that they need their best defenders back and back for good.
