LOS ANGELES _ Patience paid off for the Cubs during an unforeseen incident on their flight from Washington to Los Angeles.
The Cubs didn't arrive in LA until about lunchtime Friday because of an illness to a member of their traveling party that necessitated an emergency landing in Albuquerque, N.M. By the time the passenger felt well enough for the trip to resume, the Cubs had to wait for another pilot because of regulations regarding how long a pilot can work.
"My biggest concern was that there might (not) be enough food for everybody," manager Joe Maddon said. "But we were on a big 767 with plenty of room. We all settled in. We knew there was a reason."
Maddon was proud of his players as they "rallied around the person that was ill. There was a lot of support going on.
"So from that perspective I was looking at it from the camaraderie, the family kind of component to the entire evening."
