Ilkay Gundogan wants to play in Turkey after leaving Man City

Ilkay Gundogan has admitted that even though he is happy at Manchester City, he wants to play in Turkey one day.

Gundogan was Pep Guardiola's first signing as City manager and although he suffer injury turmoil during the first couple of years of his tenure, he has gone on to become an important member of the team.

The tidy and versatile midfielder played a vital part of City's domestic treble triumph last season, as he filled in the holding role many times in the absence of the injured Fernandinho, despite uncertainty surrounding his future.

Gundogan's contract was running down and he seemed in no hurry to extend it but, finally, he penned a new deal in August to stay at the Etihad until 2023.

By that time he would be 32-years-old and he has admitted he would always say yes to a move to Turkey, where his family has roots.

“Of course, I follow the Süper Lig. Not every game, but every now and then I watch some games,” he told Futbolarena.

“There is a team I have a certain sympathy for, but it would not be correct to name it now.

“I could play in the Süper Lig in four or five years. I would love to do that. However, I don’t have to come to Turkey as a footballer. I can also very well imagine a job as a trainer.

“I’m currently happy here. But things can change quickly in the football business. But I would always say “yes” to Turkey.

“Mehmet Ekici is a very good friend of mine. We met on my last visit to Istanbul. Shinji Kagawa played at Besiktas. We all met for a coffee together. I like “Memo”, and I like to watch him.”
