Ilkay Gundogan has signed a new four year deal with Manchester City to keep him at the club until 2023.
After lengthy negotiations the club announced on Friday morning that the 28-year-old had agreed a new deal to keep him at the Etihad.
Gundogan’s previous contract had one year left to run and the Germany international had been stalling on agreeing a new deal but City had indicated they would not be selling him even if he didn’t agree new terms.
The midfielder admitted he is happy to have extended his stay with the champions.
“I am very happy to have signed the new contact,” he said.
“I have hugely enjoyed the last three years here at City and everyone at the club has helped make me feel at home from my very first day.
“It’s a privilege to be part of this team, playing the style of football we do and winning trophies. It’s very difficult to do that and I’m delighted to be a part of it.
“I’m really excited about what we can go on to achieve in the next few seasons.”
The player indicated last weekend after the Community Shield that he was ready to commit his long-term future to the club.
He told reporters: “If you stay patient for another couple of weeks you will know – we will see.
"Every situation is different and individual. Everyone has to take a decision for himself. These kind of decisions sometimes take a little bit of time.
“During last season I asked people to be patient because it’s a decision you make for the next few years. That’s why I was calm and relaxed and still am. It’s a comfortable situation for me at the moment.”
