Ilkay Gundogan reveals stance on new Champions League format amid Man City Super League fallout

Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan has taken to social media to speak out over the new Champions League format.

The Blues announced on Tuesday night they no longer intended to participate in the controversial closed shop 'elite' Super League after backlash from fans and criticism from players while Pep Guardiola even refused to call it sport.

Kevin De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte used their platforms on social media to publicly condemn the proposal earlier in the week and Gundogan is now the latest City star to express his views, reacting to UEFA's new Champions League format amid the fallout.

"With all the Super League stuff going on... can we please also speak about the new Champions League format? More and more and more games, is no one thinking about us players," Gundogan wrote.

"The new UCL format is just the lesser of the two evils in comparison to the Super League.

"The UCL format right now works great and that is why it's the most popular club competition in the world - for us players and for the fans."

UEFA have confirmed their plans to change the current tournament from 2024/25 onwards which will signal the most significant change in the competition's history with the traditional group stage evolving to a single league stage including all participating teams.
