Ilkay Gundogan claims Manchester derby ‘could have been 3-0 or 4-0 at half-time’ as City beat United

Ilkay Gundogan has described yesterday’s win over Manchester United as “enjoyable” in a damning indictment on the gap between them and Manchester City.

While the 2-0 scoreline was less dramatic than the 5-0 humbling at the hands of Liverpool last month, United have now been soundly beaten by two of their biggest rivals at home and could even face a fight to finish in the top four following the appointment of Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

Sky pundit Gary Neville described City’s win as a “calm annihilation” and, speaking after the game, Gundogan hinted the visitors felt they could have won by an even larger scoreline.

“It was really fun, quite enjoyable,” said midfielder Gundogan.

“It was a great first half where we could have scored more goals. It could have been 3-0 or 4-0 at half-time. Their keeper made some incredible saves.

“The second half was about staying patient, keeping the ball, keeping possession, passing the ball, getting into a certain rhythm and not giving them any chances.

“I don’t remember that they had any chances in the second half.”
