Ilkay Gundogan backs Caglar Soyuncu for Man City transfer

When Manchester City pulled out of the race to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester last summer, they were left with a hole in their defence that has been exposed numerous times this season.

However, Leicester were also without Maguire, but have not experienced the same defensive issues - mainly due to the progression of Caglar Soyuncu.

The Turkey international has impressed this season as he has stepped up at the King Power Stadium, prompting suggestions that City could do worse than try to sign him this summer.

That is an opinion echoed by City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who named Soyuncu as the Turkish player he would most like to see at the Etihad.

Speaking to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Gundogan praised Soyuncu's form this season, describing him as the Premier League's best centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool.

“I agree with the general opinion of the football public. In this season, Çaglar Soyuncu had the best performance in the Premier League after Van Dijk," Gundogan said.

"I didn't know him before. We met when we met in matches. In addition to the Premier League games two seasons ago, we also matched with Leicester City in a cup. We became competitors in many matches. We always saw and talked to each other.

"We started getting to know each other. His football understanding and character are also very good. His performances for both Leicester and the national team have been good."

Gundogan was then prompted to name the Turkish player he would want City to sign, and he returned to Soyuncu, before surprisingly mentioning Crystal Palace's on-loan striker Cenk Tosun.

“The first thing that comes to my mind about the Turkish player I want to see in Manchester City is Caglar," Gundogan said.

"I can also count Cenk Tosun. He may be at this level in the coming periods. I think he also played well, suffering an unlucky injury."
