Real Madrid and Spain legend Iker Casillas has officially announced his retirement from football.
The 39-year-old goalkeeper has not played a game for current club FC Porto since suffering a heart attack last year, but had quashed previous talk of retirement, saying he would announce the decision when the time was right.
Casillas had planned to stand in elections for the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) presidency this year, but later withdrew his candidacy.
"The important thing is the path you travel and the people that accompany you, not the destination to which it takes you," Casillas wrote on his social media channels in a post which included a statement confirming his decision to retire.
"Because that, with work and effort, arrives alone and I think I can say, without hesitation, that it has been the dream path and the dream destiny."
Casillas captained Spain to their 2010 World Cup win and also claimed two European Championships with La Roja.
At Real Madrid, the goalkeeper won three Champions League titles and five LaLiga crowns, before moving to Portuguese giants Porto in 2015 and adding four more trophies to his collection.
