Swimmer Rikako Ikee appears to be taking another step on her comeback to competition from leukemia, entering a race organized by the Tokyo Swimming Association, it was learned Tuesday.

According to sources, the 20-year-old entered one race category, the 50-meter freestyle, in the competition to be held Aug. 29 at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center.

If she does participate, it will be her first race in 19 months, since February 2019, when she announced she had leukemia.

The special event was organized by the association on its own as many competitive events have been canceled due to novel coronavirus infections.
