The Ikenobo School of flower arranging held its first ceremony of the year at two locations including the Iemoto dojo in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, on Tuesday.

The annual ceremony, which usually attracts about 1,500 people, was scaled down due to the coronavirus pandemic, featuring arrangements of about 170 participants aged from 13 to 89.

Under the guidance of Senko Ikenobo, 15 kimono-clad students worked on pieces using floral elements associated with the New Year, such as the flowers of pine and plum trees.

"I worked on the flowers with gratitude for being able to take part in the first arrangement of the year under such circumstances," said a student from Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture.
