Ikea will pay £35m to parents of toddler killed by chest of drawers

Ikea will pay parents £35million after a toddler was killed when he became trapped under a chest of drawers.

Jozef Dudek was two years old when an Ikea Malm dresser toppled over and suffocated him in May 2017.

The 32kg piece of furniture had been recalled more than a year earlier due to safety concerns after three other toddlers were killed in similar circumstances, Birmingham Live reports.

Lawyers say the Dudek's settlement figure is the largest in US history.

In a joint statement, Jozef's parents Joleen and Craig Dudek previously said: "We never thought that a two year old could cause a dresser just 30 inches (76cm) high to topple over and suffocate him.

"It was only later that we learned that [it] was unstable by design.

"We are telling our story because we do not want this to happen to another family."

The Swedish furniture giant has previously paid out £40m in a joint settlement to the parents of two-year-olds Camden Ellis and Curren Collas, and 23-month-old Ted McGee, who were all crushed by the chest of drawers.

The Malm series is still on sale in the UK.

A safety website on the Ikea website reads: "WARNING! TIPPING HAZARD – Unanchored furniture can tip over.

"This furniture shall be anchored to the wall with the enclosed safety fitting to prevent it from tipping over.

"Different wall materials require different types of fixing devices. Use fixing devices suitable for the walls in your home."
