IKEA will pay £35 million to the parents of a toddler killed by chest of drawers

Furniture retailer IKEA will pay the parents of a two-year-old boy £35 million, after he died when a chest of drawers toppled over on him.

Jozef Dudek was at his home in California when the Malm chest of drawers fell onto him and suffocated him to death.

The chest of drawers weighed 32kg, and had been recalled more than a year before the tragic incident, following safety concerns after three other toddlers were killed in similar circumstances.

The £35 million settlement is the biggest payment in US history, according to lawyers.

Jozef's parents Joleen and Craig Dudek said they were devastated by the death of their son in May 2017, the Mirror reports .

In a joint statement the parents said: "We never thought that a two-year-old could cause a dresser just 30 inches (76cm) high to topple over and suffocate him.

"It was only later that we learned that [it] was unstable by design.

"We are telling our story because we do not want this to happen to another family."

Now, they are both urging other mums and dads who may still have the Malm unit to return it immediately.

Joleen and Craig are donating $1m of their settlement money to groups who work to protect children from dangerous products. The money equates to about £760,000.

The Malm series is still on sale in the UK but it carries a tipping hazard warning.
