Ikea wants to build 173 flat-pack homes in Knowle West

A housing developer co-owned by Ikea has submitted plans to build nearly 200 flat-pack homes on a site in south Bristol.

Last year Bristol City Council announced it had entered into a partnership with BoKlok, a company jointly owned by the Swedish retailer and construction firm Skanska which specialises in factory-built housing which can be constructed at a low cost.

A plot of land in Airport Road in Knowle West, east of Filwood Green Business Park, was earmarked as a site by the housing developer where it could build 200 homes.

Now the firm has submitted a planning application to the council requesting permission to build 173 homes on the land surrounding Brislington Brook.

According to the Design and access statement the development will include 96 flats split over a number of four-storey apartment blocks and 77 houses.

Of the 173 properties on the site, 121 (70 per cent) would be available on the open market, 12 (7 per cent) would be classed as “intermediate” such as shared ownership, and 40 (23 per cent) would be available at social rent.

On its website BoKlok describes itself as a "groundbreaking housing concept", which builds blocks of flats and terraced houses for people who want to live in a home of their own, “but still have money left at the end of the month”.

The Swedish company has been in operation since the early 1990s and has already built 11,000 homes across Scandinavia.

Last year the firm also announced a similar agreement with Worthing council in West Sussex, but this would be the first project of its kind in Bristol.

In October the council’s cabinet agreed to enter a “non-binding Memorandum of Understanding” with Boklok to deliver new homes in the city over the next five years as part of Bristol Housing Festival.

The council agreed to dispose of the Airport Road site to Boklok as part of the agreement.
