Ikea to pay out £35 million after two-year-old killed by fallen chest of drawers

Ikea is set to pay out £35 million to the parents of a two-year-old who died after a chest of drawers from the shop toppled onto him.

Toddler Jozef Dudek was at home in the United States when the Ikea Malm dresser fell over and suffocated him in May of 2017. The furniture item, weighing 32kg, had been recalled more than a year prior to the incident over safety concerns.

Jozef's parents, Joleen and Craig Dudek, said in a joint statement: "We never thought that a two-year-old could cause a dresser just 30 inches (76cm) high to topple over and suffocate him. It was only later that we learned that [it] was unstable by design."

They said they wanted to share their story to prevent it happening to others.

The Swedish furniture giant previously paid out £40m in a joint settlement to the parents of two-year-olds Camden Ellis and Curren Collas, and 23-month-old Ted McGee, who were all crushed by the chest of drawers.

The Malm series is still on sale in the UK. It carries a safety warning on the Ikea website, advising that the item should be anchored to the wall to prevent it tipping over.
