Ikea, Swedish House Mafia collab on beefy turntable for new fall collection

When two Swedish giants collide, we get a funky, Bauhaus furniture collection. The latest Obegränsad collection — Swedish for “unlimited” — was a result of the collaboration between Ikea and Swedish House Mafia. The duo teased three pieces that are part of the collection during Milan Design Week, including a record player, a desk, and an armchair.

As is expected with Ikea, this collection is aimed at providing a more affordable alternative for music equipment and furniture for musicians or audiophiles. Ikea says the Obegränsad collection is essential for making a home studio at an affordable price.

All black everything —

Drawing inspiration from Swedish House Mafia’s all-black aesthetic, Ikea went with a very minimal look for the record player. The collaborators did opt for a chunkier, solid design so you really notice it in a room. Ikea designer, Friso Wiersma, said in a press release that Ikea wanted something “very bold” and for the record player to “be a very physical manifestation of music.” It can also be paired with Ikea’s Eneby speaker.

Ikea and Swedish House Mafia teased an all-black desk that looks pretty standard, outside of the two speaker stands that were meant to support speakers at ear level. The desk includes a pull-out shelf just below the desk top that’s meant for midi keyboards for making music, or just regular keyboards.

The collection includes this pretty uncomfortable-looking armchair from Ikea, as well. Ikea says the armchair is meant to create a relaxing environment to enjoy music, but something about the austere design screams back pain. At least there’s adjustable straps to finetune how it feels.

Fall collection —

These three products were just a preview of the entire Obegränsad collection that’s set to be launched globally in fall 2022. It’ll include more than 20 pieces of furniture all centered around the theme of making or enjoying music.

If you’re looking for a cheaper way to get make a home studio or just want to deck your apartment out Swedish House Mafia-style, this collection is for you. If not, this all-black collection still looks like it’ll offer decent minimalist furniture pieces even if you aren’t a fan of the Swedish supergroup.
