IKEA still struggling to keep up with huge demand for desks and chairs during home office boom

IKEA has asked customers to "bear with us" as it tries to keep up with unrelenting demand for home office furniture.

Many former office workers are making a more permanent shift to a home set-up, as a result of changing trends triggered by the coronavirus lockdown.

Shoppers hoping to kit out their new workplace with furniture from the Swedish retailer are reporting that many items are still out of stock, however.

A notice at the top IKEA's UK website states: "We currently have a higher demand for our office furniture than we can supply.

"Please bear with us while we work to improve our availability, in the meantime please save your favourite items to your wish list."

One shopper tweeted IKEA this week asking for an update on a specific desk, reporting that it has been "unavailable online for months and not in stock near me".

Responding to another Twitter last week asking about another desk, IKEA advised that there was a "supply issue" and it did not know when it will be back in stock.

The home working boom is expected to continue beyond the pandemic.

Last September, a YouGov survey of almost 5,000 workers in Britain found that 57 per cent wanted to retain at least some element of home working in future.

There were reports last year of a commercial property crash due to the shift towards home working, which some experts predict will continue as many companies continue to offer more flexible ways of working.

In July a report from the Treasury's Office for Budget Responsibility suggested business property use "could change materially".

It added: "Survey evidence points to lower expected demand for retail and office space compared to industrial space over the next 12 months.

"That would be consistent with the pandemic accelerating trends towards online shopping and for more office-based employees to work in future from home.

"Conversely, should some degree of social distancing be required permanently, the need for greater space per employee could lift demand for office space."

IKEA is set to reopen its stores, including the Bristol branch, on Monday (April 12).
