IKEA shopper shares hack to save 'a fortune' on furniture - but there's a catch

An IKEA shopper has shared a clever hack that can land you with free money to spend in store.

As the new year begins, many will be looking to start spring cleaning early which might lead to some wanting to get rid of old furniture.

To avoid throwing a bookshelf into the tip where it will simply sit in a landfill, a thrifty shopper has taken to social media to share what you can do with your old IKEA products.

Those who are looking to get rid of old IKEA furniture can give it back to the store in return for cash.

Posting on popular Facebook group Extreme Coupons and Bargaining UK, a woman shared a photo she snapped at her local store with the added caption: "For anyone who has Ikea furniture they no longer need.

"We sold back 1 shelf, 1 table (desk) top, 4 table legs and a child’s chair and came away with a £30 Ikea voucher."

The sign post reads: 'Give IKEA furniture you no longer need a second a life. We'll give you a refund card to spend in store or online and your old furniture a second chance. Visit IKEA.co.uk/buyback."

The post quickly gathered 3.7k likes and 1.2k comments.

On IKEA's website, the Swedish store points out millions of pieces of second hand furniture go to waste and their buy back scheme aims to provide them with as 'many lives as possible'.

However, don't get caught out on the day as the pieces must be fully assembled when taken back to your local store, something that might prove a challenge depending on how big the furniture is.

One Facebook user Christina praised the scheme, writing: "What a great idea!"

"I've just took apart set 6 drawers, sitting in pile on my drive ready for skip, so this is interesting," a second added.

Taharah commented on the post: "That’s excellent! Will defo keep this in mind because we’re planning on changing kids room which includes 3 pieces of IKEA furniture"

Another shopper warned that if a piece of furniture doesn't have an IKEA label on it, the store will be unlikely to take it and added: "I would do an online quote with them first and see if you can get more selling them yourself first before being inconvenienced."

And Kamila warned: "Remember it has to be a whole item and not older than 7 years."

On IKEA's terms and conditions, it breaks down the pricing:

Pricing structure

  • As new – no scratches: 50% of the original price
  • Very good – minor scratches: 40% of original price
  • Well-used – several scratches: 30% of original price

If IKEA are unable to sell your second-hand IKEA products, they will dispose of them responsibly and recycle them wherever possible.

The specific products that are eligible for the buy back scheme are listed here but will include the following:

  • All dressers, office drawer cabinets, small structures with drawers, display storage, sideboards
  • Bookcases and shelf units
  • Small tables
  • Multimedia furniture
  • Cabinets
  • Dining tables and desks
  • Chairs and stools (excl upholstered or leather chairs and stools)
  • Chest of drawers
  • Children’s products (excluding Baby products as below)
