IKEA reveals its first Sonos-powered speaker - and it doubles up as a BOOKSHELF

IKEA has revealed the first official images of its Sonos-powered smart speaker , which is expected to cost significantly less than Sonos' own "Play" speakers when it goes on sale next month.

The speaker, which has been given the suitably Scandi-sounding name of "Symfonisk", can either stand upright on a table, or be mounted on the wall sideways, allowing it to double as a shelf or nightstand.

It has a simple black and grey design, and features both the Ikea and Sonos logos in white across the top, as well as control buttons along the bottom.

The Symfonisk speaker has already been awarded a Red Dot Award, which is one of the most respected international design competitions in the world.

IKEA and Sonos have previously said that the new speakers will be sold "at an affordable price". However, the actual price is yet to be announced.

The cheapest Sonos speaker, the Play:1, currently sells for £149 in the UK.

A recent report by 9to5Mac suggested that the Symfonisk speaker would start from around $120 (£90), but this has not been confirmed.

IKEA will officially announce the speaker at a launch event in Milan on April 9, so no doubt we'll find out more then.

The event will also also showcase some of IKEA's other "smart home" products, including its smart lighting system "Trådfri".

"For IKEA, the smart home is not about gadgets, it's about making life at home better with solutions that create a better atmosphere, make you live a more convenient life and make you feel safe," said Björn Block, Business Leader for IKEA Home Smart.

"The collaboration with Sonos is a great example of this, offering affordable high-quality sound in combination with a great design piece that we hope will find its way into the many people’s homes."
