Ikea responds to reports it has set a UK reopening date

Furniture and home accessories store Ikea has played down reports that it has set a date for when stores will reopen.

The company closed all of its sites on March 19 a few days before Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced coronavirus lockdown measures in the UK.

Customers have not able to walk around the Swedish-based firm's shop floors since then, but national media reports claimed that Ikea was planning to reopen 18 branches across the UK on May 18.

However, when approached by DevonLive about the situation, Ikea said it had not confirmed when stores will reopen.

"For now, all our stores across the UK and Ireland remain closed," an Ikea spokesperson said.

"We are looking forward to welcoming customers back to our stores and will only do so as the situation allows, in line with government guidance.

"As a responsible company we are making extensive plans, and adopting even further enhanced safety measures, so that when we do reopen, our customers and co-workers feel safe and comfortable in our stores.

"The health and safety of our customers, co-workers and suppliers remains our highest priority."

People are still able to order deliveries from the store.
