IKEA responds to claims Leeds store will reopen this week

IKEA stores across the country have been closed for almost two months now in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Customers have been left unable to shop at the huge warehouses, including the Leeds store at Birstall Shopping Park, for almost nine weeks now  - although online deliveries are still available.

However, rumours had started circulating that some UK stores would reopen from today (Monday), with the Mirror suggesting that 18 stores would throw open their doors as part of an initial trial.

However, an IKEA spokesperson told LeedsLive that there are no immediate plans to open the Leeds store or any others across the country.

'We are waiting for further clarity from the UK government'

In a statement, they said: "It is too early to say when we will reopen our units in the UK.

"We are waiting for further clarity from the UK government on ease of the lockdown restrictions, and will only open in line with UK government guidance.

"As we continue to plan for the safe reopening of our stores, and look forward to welcoming back our customers in our stores in the not too distant future, they can still purchase our products online."

Although IKEA stores remain closed, other businesses are slowly beginning to reopen.

B&Q stores have been open for several weeks, while a number of fast food chains are rolling out delivery services once again - including McDonald's, Burger King and KFC.

Matalan are the latest high-street chain to announce they are reopening stores from today. Stores in Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Rotherham are among those chosen for the first wave of shops to open for the first time since the lockdown.
