'IKEA of sports equipment' Decathlon store to begin construction in Ballymun on Monday

Sports giant Decathlon will begin construction on their new Dublin store on Monday September 3.

Locals are being warned to expect traffic implications and delays in the area as the highly anticipated and welcomed store begins the building of its Ballymun premises.

The French sports retailer - coined the "IKEA of sporting equipment" by various US and Australian publications - have operated an ecommerce platform in Ireland since November 2017 but were delighted to announce the opening of their store near IKEA.

Decathlon Ireland CEO Bastien Grandgeorge said that the company hopes to "change the market, we will show it cannot be a luxury to practice sport" while adding that Decathlon was committed to offering prices at 20% less than competitors.

Speaking about the announcement in 2018, the company said: "As a family company, we are all very excited to announce the opening of the Sports Hub with over 70 Sports located in Ballymun, just next to IKEA.

"Our planning application has been fully granted so the construction will begin very soon.

"Our aim in Ireland is to have three retail touchpoints in Dublin and eventually up to nine stores across Ireland."

The store will be the first of nine planned shops for Ireland, three of which will be in Dublin.
