IKEA is launching robotic FURNITURE to help city dwellers maximise space

If you live in a busy city, it’s likely you’ve had the joyous experience of squeezing all your belongings into a tiny flat at some point.

But the days of cramming boxes beneath your bed could be a thing of the past, thanks to IKEA’s new furniture line.

The Swedish firm has announced that it is collaborating with start-up, Ori, to develop robotic furniture, called ROGNAN.

IKEA explained: “With ROGNAN as a robotic furniture solution for small space living, people will be able to turn small spaces into smart spaces that have all the comfort and convenience of a home.”

ROGNAN will consist of a large storage system that can morph into a bed, sofa, desk or wardrobe (IKEA)

While details on the robotic furniture are sparse, images shared by IKEA indicate it will consist of a large storage system that can morph into a bed, sofa, desk or wardrobe.

According to MIT Technology Review , the furniture is controlled by a touchpad, and at its full extent, takes up 3 x 3.5 metres of space.

It remains unclear how much ROGNAN will cost, and whether or not it will come flat-packed…

Thankfully, there isn’t too long to wait to find out what IKEA has in store for us. The Rognan will launch in 2020.

This isn't IKEA's first foray into the world of technology. In March, the firm revealed its first Sonos-powered speaker, which has been given the suitably Scandi-sounding name of "Symfonisk".

The speaker can either stand upright on a table, or be mounted on the wall sideways, allowing it to double as a shelf or nightstand.
