Ikea giving away real Christmas trees for free at Scots stores to spread 'much-needed' festive cheer

Ikea is giving away free Christmas trees in a bid to give Scots some ‘much-needed’ festive cheer.

The Swedish furniture firm says that footfall has been hit by current Covid travel restrictions at its branches in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

As a result, Ikea is giving away its remaining stock of trees to locals near the branches, charities and its own employees to ensure that they go to a good home over the festive period.

Real Christmas trees from Ikea normally cost £29 in the run up to the festive celebrations.

A spokesperson confirmed the scheme in Edinburgh, while people on social media have clocked a similar deal at the Glasgow branch near Braehead Shopping Centre.

“To help spread a little festive cheer at a time when it is much needed, IKEA Edinburgh is giving away its remaining Christmas trees, while stocks last”, the firm said in a statement.

“With Covid-19 travel restrictions impacting footfall to the store, we are delighted to offer them to customers, charities and our co-workers in this way, to ensure that they go to a good home this Christmas.”

Both branches are based in the Midlothian and Renfrewshire council areas, where level three coronavirus restrictions are currently in force.

It is currently illegal for Scots to travel in and out of these areas under the rules set by the Scottish Government’s Covid alert level system.
