IKEA cut sick pay for staff unvaccinated against Covid to combat high absence rates

Unvaccinated staff working for Ikea have been told that they will have their sick pay cut if identified as a close contact.

At present, self-isolation guidelines for Scottish workers means that "any close contact who is not fully vaccinated (three doses) will still have to self-isolate for 10 days and take a PCR test."

The new covid sick pay rules also means that staff who have not had their vaccines could receive as little as £96.35 a week under Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) obligations.

This meets the legal minimum requirements despite the average pay for the chain ranging upwards of £400 - depending on whether you're located in or outwith the London area.

The Swedish chain, who have more than 10,000 staff across the UK, have said that "mitigating circumstances" would be taken into consideration.

Later the company clarified that the policy only affects unvaccinated workers with "high levels of absence", reports The Mail on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the furniture chain said: "We appreciate that this is an emotive topic and all circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis, therefore anyone in doubt or concerned about their situation is encouraged to speak to their manager."
