Ikea branches to reopen in Scotland at start of next month as lockdown eases

Ikea stores in Scotland will welcome back customers once again in just over two weeks time as lockdown restrictions continue to ease.

The Swedish furniture firm temporarily closed when Scotland was plunged into a strict stay at home lockdown from Boxing Day last year.

Customers have only been able to pick up items of furniture through Ikea’s online shop or on its click and collect service.

Nicola Sturgeon yesterday announced that the number of business allowed to open during lockdown will be extended to homeware shops from April 5.

This has paved the way for Ikea to reopen its branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen on that very date.

Work is now underway to ensure the appropriate safety measures are in place to protect customers and workers.

A spokesperson for Ikea told the Daily Record : “Life at home continues to be more important than ever and now that we have a clear date for homeware stores to reopen, we are working towards ensuring our stores and ready to safety welcome back customers.

“We look forward to reopening our stores in Edinburgh and Glasgow and our Aberdeen Order and Collection Point on April 5.

“In the mean time, customers can continue to shop with us online for home delivery or Click and Collect.”

Ikea will join a series of other businesses that have been given the green light to reopen from April 5.

Garden centres, key cutting services, electrical repair services and vehicle showrooms are among the others allowed to reopen from that date.

Scots will also be able to get a much-needed haircut at their local hairdresser or salon from then.

More of Scotland’s economy is expected to reopen in the weeks that follow, including hospitality and non-essential retail.

It is hoped that the country will move to ‘at least’ the lowest level of coronavirus restrictions from the end of June.
