IKEA announces closure of all UK stores in response to coronavirus outbreak

IKEA has announced that it will be closing all its UK stores on Friday.

The furniture company revealed it would be shutting every outlet in response to the coronavirus outbreak, including its store in Gateshead.

Peter Jelkeby, country retail manager and chief sustainability officer, said the priority was to ensure the health and safety of customers and co-workers.

He said: "As a precautionary measure against the ongoing risk of Covid-19, we will temporarily close all UK and Ireland stores to customers on 20th March, 6pm.

"You will continue to be able to browse and purchase our range online or through the app, and have our products delivered directly to you. You will also be able to request a contact-free delivery if you prefer.

"Co-workers are at the heart of our business and we’re committed to supporting them in the best possible way during this complex and evolving situation.

"We would like to thank our co-workers and partners for their dedication and hard work through these unprecedented times.

"We look forward to welcoming you back to our stores soon & thank you for your understanding."
