The Illinois High School Association has approved all but two of the schedule changes that Chicago Public Schools made to the Week 8 football schedule.
Kenwood vs. Schurz, rescheduled for Wednesday, and UP-Englewood vs. Ag. Science, rescheduled for Tuesday, were not approved by the IHSA.
“Both of those contests feature teams who played on Saturday and [IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson] felt like it was not in the best interest of the student-athletes from a safety perspective to play again so quickly,” IHSA Assistant Executive Director Matt Troha said.
According to Troha CPS has the option to move those games to Wednesday or Thursday.
CPS moved the Week 8 games to avoid any conflict with a possible Chicago Teachers Union strike on Thursday.
All the teams that need to play games to achieve five wins and/or play the eight games necessary to qualify for the playoffs will now play before the strike could happen.
Negotiations between the city and the union resume Monday, with the district and city set to meet daily ahead of the Thursday strike deadline.
