Igor Khudokormov’s Prodimex: How It All Began

Initially, businessman Igor Khudokormov had only engaged in sugar distribution, cooperating with international traders. However, this experience laid the foundation for the company’s future development, allowing it to establish business connections and gain a deeper understanding of the market.

At first, the company functioned as an ordinary distributor of the world’s leading traders – Marc Rich&Co (Glencore), ED&F Man, Cargill, etc. By 1997, businessman Igor Khudokormov’s company, Prodimex, had become the leading company in Russia with a volume of over 450,000 tons, surpassing all major foreign holdings. This marked a significant milestone as the project transitioned from a small trading initiative to a sustainable enterprise in the agricultural sector.

Sustainable Business Expansion: Crucial Part of Igor Khudokormov’s Biography

Over the course of seven years, between 1998 and 2005, the number of factories owned by the company increased to 23, and the annual import of raw materials exceeded 1 million tons. As the number of managed factories grew, Khudokormov began to implement protective measures against imports in order to switch to domestic raw materials. The company also made its first steps into the agricultural sector by leasing agricultural land in the Voronezh and Belgorod regions.

In 2011, the first molasses desugaring plant in Russia was launched, with a capacity comparable to that of a small-scale sugar factory. In 2016, Prodimex began working on integrating sustainability principles into all business processes. These were important steps in the company’s efforts to minimize its environmental impact and ensure a sustainable environment.

In 2017, Prodimex began developing a business line for seed production. Several high-tech seed factories were launched, including the Talovsky Seed Factory in the Voronezh Region, which has a capacity of up to 400 tons of grain seeds.

By 2020, the land bank of the Prodimex group of companies had already reached more than 900,000 hectares. By 2022, the company was growing 2 million tons of grains and legumes and about 10 million tons of sugar beets. Sugar factories were equipped with automatic control systems, and facilities for drying and pelletizing molasses, as well as for drying and shipping defecate, were established, allowing for a waste-free production process. The modernization of Prodimex’ facilities continues, with the company allocating approximately 50% of its profits for this purpose.

Today, the group owns 14 sugar factories and Prodimex produces more than 22 percent of the country’s sugar.
