Zohran Mamdani is taking a very different approach to public communication, and it is happening on a platform more commonly associated with gamers and livestream creators than city politics. The New York City mayor officially launched a new Twitch-based livestream series designed to answer questions from residents in real time, marking one of the boldest social media experiments by a major American politician in recent years.
The new series, titled “Talk with the People,” debuted on May 21 and instantly drew attention online. While the livestream is also available across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky, Twitch will serve as the primary platform where viewers can interact directly with Mamdani through live chat questions. The move reflects how aggressively the mayor’s office is targeting younger audiences who rarely engage with traditional political coverage.
Zohran Mamdani uses Twitch to reshape political communication
Long before entering City Hall, Mamdani built much of his public image through digital-first campaigning and highly shareable online videos. That background is clearly shaping how he plans to govern.
In a statement shared with Polygon, Mamdani explained why he believes livestreaming can bridge the growing gap between younger voters and local government.
