IFA 'hopeful' of Irish Cup kick-off despite fresh lockdown concerns

The Irish FA "remains hopeful" that next month's Irish Cup will kick-off as planned.

Doubts have been raised over whether some ties will get the go-ahead on January 9 if more NI Executive restrictions are put in place to combat the risk of Covid-19.

There are reports that new measures will come into force on December 28 and could last six weeks.

Any further restrictions could see non-elite sports teams having to suspend all activity, which has the potential to derail many first round ties in the Irish Cup.

Thirty-two teams will go into Thursday's draw, but only the 12 Premiership clubs are deemed to be elite.

The first round draw is also made up of 12 clubs from the Championship and eight other Intermediate teams.

An IFA spokesperson told Belfast Live that they are continuing to monitor the ongoing situation regarding Covid restrictions in Northern Ireland, but "remain hopeful" that next month's Irish Cup will proceed as planned.

"We will endeavour to play the first round ties on January 9, but obviously this is a very fluid situation which will be monitored," the association said.

"Obviously a lot will depend on what happens between now and then with regards any restrictions, and we are very aware of the ongoing situation.

"Until any measures are put in place then we will prepare as normal for next month's ties."

Thursday's draw will take place at 5.30pm and you can follow it on Belfast Live's blog.
