IFA chief elected to £190,000 FIFA vice-president role at UEFA congress

Irish FA president David Martin believes his election as Fifa vice-president is a positive development for football in Northern Ireland.

Dromore man Martin, who will serve a two-year term, won yesterday’s vote for the lucrative £190,000 post after securing the support of 48 of the 55 delegates.

The 67-year-old defeated FA of Wales president Kieran O'Connor and Scottish FA vice-president Mike Mulraney at Uefa's Congress in Montreux..

The high-profile position, which is reserved for the UK associations, became vacant after FA chairman Greg Clarke's resignation in November.

Martin, who was defeated by Clarke in a prior election in 2019, said: “I am delighted to have been elected as a Fifa vice-president by the Uefa member associations at the 2021 congress.

“It is great for both the association and the country.”

Working under Fifa president Gianni Infantino, Fifa has eight vice-president positions, one of which is reserved for the four UK associations.

Martin is the third Northern Ireland football administrator to hold the post, following in the footsteps of former IFA presidents Harry Cavan and Jim Boyce who held the post between 2011 and 2015.
